Thousand-year bloody battle of death Season 1 Episode 43 is titled “Blood for My Bone” and it exceeds expectations when it comes to dealing with Orihime versus Yhwach after a somewhat disappointing treatment in the previous chapter.
While last week’s episode did have Orihime use her shield to support Ichigo and block Yhwach’s attacks, I mentioned in my review that her power-ups weren’t as impactful as they were in the manga, even though the anime gave her more screen time than the manga Orihime did. However, the success of Blood for My Bone turned my disappointment into excitement as an Orihime fan. Kudos to the animation creative team for bringing Orihime into the spotlight in a surprising but welcome way.
A defining feature of Orihime’s ability is the instant creation of a nearly unbreakable shield. Because of everything she’s been through, Orihime’s shield never breaks, no matter how powerful the attack. The manga makes this clear when Orihime stops Yuvachi’s attack head-on. However, the animation team decided to show the shield shattering while blocking Yhwach’s combo. As an Orihime fan, that particular moment didn’t feel right, but in my opinion, I thought it was a way for the creative team to show how powerful Yhwach was and that the fight would be handled differently compared to the manga. I mean, if there was one person who could somehow overpower Orihime’s shield, it would be an enemy like the current god.
Luckily, Blood for Bones explains why the shield broke. It turns out that Orihime subconsciously accepted Yuvac’s attack because his mental stress was the same as Ichigo’s. Orihime wouldn’t be able to fully protect Ichigo if she didn’t stop him.
I love how the animation team overcame this animation-only weakness and made Orihime transcend it on the fly. After realizing which aspect of her willpower Yhwach was tapping into, Orihime gathered her determination to ensure her shield remained durable in Yhwach’s presence.
The only scene in the anime is when Orihime and Ichigo are crushed to the ground by the mental pressure of Yhwach’s OP, and only Orihime can muster the strength to stand up again. Wow! Not only does she heal Ichigo under such duress, but she actually decides to reject Yhwach’s mental pressure on both of them.
I mean, if this particular scene was part of comics at the time, younger me would have fainted reading it.
I couldn’t help but laugh when Orihime rejected Yuvachi’s mental pressure and sent it back to him. The guy quickly stopped rambling and made a condescending comment to Orihime. Yes, she was just a human being, and she had exceeded her own boundaries by participating in such a battle. But in the end, Orihime was determined to support her existence. It doesn’t matter even if her enemy is a god-like being fused with the Soul King. While she was alive, no one could get close to Ichigo.
Another moment that surprised me was the anime’s decision to still depict the iconic Orihime manga panel of her creating a giant shield. The camera even pauses at this moment. However, after everything Orihime did in that moment, I still feel like that moment worked much better in the manga than in the anime.
Regardless, the point is that Orihime has cemented herself as one of the most powerful beings in the world. bleach IP, etc., even within the broader scope of anime content, for fans who are interested in pitting characters from different IPs against each other.
In addition to Ichigo and Orihime working as a team, there’s a scene in Blood for Blood that shows how much Orihime understands Ichigo’s determination to protect others. Ichigo’s attack style would appear reckless to outsiders. But Orihime took one look and realized Ichigo had a plan. She needed to trust his decision. She did it.
A similar moment is shown in the dialogue between Ishida and Haswals during their ongoing battle. Although Haswals warned Ishida that killing Yhwach would destroy three worlds because Yhwach had placed himself in the role of the King of Souls, Ishida knew Ichigo well enough to know that Ichigo would still continue to attack Yhwach. In the process, it doesn’t matter whether the three worlds will be destroyed. It is important to do the right thing and stop Yhwach, because allowing Yhwach to win will bring about the destruction of the three worlds anyway. Basically, heroes bleach Would rather accept death than see life continue in the reality Yhwach created.
A major reveal is that after Yhwach’s defeat, Ichigo planned to make Ichigo the new Soul King to ensure that the three worlds would continue to exist, with Soul Society having the most power. I love how petty Ichigo acts in front of Yhwach, even though Yhwach said becoming the new Soul King would mean the end of Ichigo’s life. Then again, the only thing that matters to Ichigo now is defeating Yhwach.
Ichigo and Orihime’s match against Yhwach is paused, and Ichigo gains the necessary Quincy power to unlock his Mid-Void or (as fans call it) Salvation Horn form. Let’s see how this fan-anticipated format affects Yhwach.
Speaking of other major battle scenes, we see the giant Gerald quickly defeat the Visoreds. However, the odds slightly favored the good guys, as Hitsugaya, Byakuya, and Kenpachi teamed up to defeat Gerald.
It’s not easy fighting enemies that get bigger and stronger each time they’re wounded, while wielding a sword that automatically damages our hero after being slashed. There’s also the matter of making sure Gerald doesn’t fall off the platform and destroy Soul Society. I don’t like Gerald as an enemy in the comics. And I don’t like him in the anime. He’s too much trouble. But then again, when Ichigo and Orihime deal with Yhwach, he’s the perfect enemy to keep the team leader busy.
