Radwimps wrote many memorable pop songs for the soundtrack to Your Name. But while the instrumentals don’t offer the same refreshing melodies as the vocals, “Three Leaves’ Theme” is a notable exception.
Its theme can be heard early on in “Date,” which has a sparse piano introduction, as if it’s itself uncertain. Gradually, the piano adds additional sounds, creating an emerging feeling of warmth and tenderness. Once the emotional foundation is established, the track takes you on an interesting journey before returning to its core, this time backed by shimmering strings. As the piece continues towards the end, it becomes more certain while retaining the warmth established at the beginning.
“Three Leaves Theme”, like “Appointment”, is sparse at first, but this time the warmth and tenderness are more apparent when the violins are introduced, playing a lovely melody accompanied by a piano melody. In further contrast to “The Date,” whimsy is replaced by determination that transcends time and space. The connection between piano and strings is beautiful and everything ends on an exciting note.
Hisaishi Joe appears…
Of course, Radwimps’s Noda YojiroMitsuba’s composition of the theme is brilliant and unforgettable. But when the skilled hands of Joe Hisaishi (of Studio Ghibli fame) take the helm, the work takes on a new light. I was so happy when I received notification of this scheduled release.
There is tenderness and warmth from the opening chords, but Hisaishi amplifies the impact of these feelings. I found the emotional outpouring to be more diverse and complex. Here, a sense of longing is painfully painful in its delivery. It has the fortitude of the original while maintaining a gentle tone. Needless to say, I’m fascinated by the small changes Hisaishi made to enhance an already stunning work and take it to the next level. Be sure to give it a listen!
