Yoshitomi serializes action science fiction comics on Dengeki Comics Gao! Magazine from January 1996 to July 2003. Kadokawa published 19 volumes of the manga. VIZ Media licensed the English version of the manga and published two volumes before relinquishing the license.
Yoshitomi later started a sequel manga, Cannibalism: Main Courseserialized in “Young Sirius” from May 2014 to June 2019. Kodansha published six volumes of the series.
Studio Deen adapted the manga into a 12-episode television animation, which aired in the winter of 1997. The 12-episode sequel series, Cannibal ’98also produced by the same studio and aired in the fall of 1998.
Toshiba Digital Frontier (now Hakuhodo DY Music & Pictures) released a three-volume DVD of the first season in Japan, which was later included in a limited edition DVD box set in 2001. In 2015, NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan released both TV series in a Blu-ray box set.
