Demons of the Shadow Realm Episode 15 of the first season of the anime is called “Yuru and Danji”, episode 16 is called “Kagemori and Shingo”, and episode 17 is called “Crybaby and Naughty Child”. There is a lot of action and a bunch of characters shrinking down to a specific location.
Since Danji revealed his true nature to Yuru in the last episode, I’ve been looking forward to seeing how the creative team would handle exploring Yuru’s emotions, especially since Yuru isn’t exactly the most emotionally vulnerable protagonist.
It makes sense that Yuru would want to isolate himself to clear his head. Living in the East Village, whenever he feels overwhelmed, he goes for a walk in the mountains. According to Yulu, doing this helps him focus more because there are many threats in the mountains that could kill him. Going into survival mode makes things easier. This time, however, although Yuru left their group, he was still in a park. Yuru also saw the city filled with people. No longer as lonely as before, it reminded him of his moments of friendship with Danji.
Danji is the one who assures young Yuru that he will never be alone after his parents flee the village. Danji is also always by Yuru’s side, even when Yuru goes to the mountains to clear her mind. Yes, Danji is the devil, but I think even Yuru knows their relationship is genuine. I love that Yuru realizes that he needs to have an actual conversation with Danji about their friendship and Danji’s lies in order for Yuru to accept the situation. Ignoring this is not going to help your childhood friend.
However, before Yuru could speak to Danji, the little devil had already set off to find the fake Asha. Danji did ask Ken to tell Yuru that he was sorry for lying to him. But yes, these two will need to talk face-to-face soon.
Della tells Yulu that Ivan attacked the East Village and took the fake Asha and the child hostage in exchange for Yulu’s capture, and it makes sense that Yulu’s crew would come up with a plan to free the hostages. Also, similar to Danji, Yuru does have a close connection to her despite the fact that the fake Asha is a demon pretending to be Asha. Although there were many conflicting emotions in his heart, in the final analysis, Yuru did not want the fake Asha to die.
The Jingsen family also took action. This time, Gonzo is involved in the situation. Gonzo’s team consists of Gabby, Natsuki (more on that later), and Fuyuki. Everyone is closing in on the warehouse where Yuro meets the mysterious kidnapper. Of course, things didn’t go according to plan.
Yuru is captured by one of Asuma’s demons, resulting in a very intense scene. The animators impressively showcased Yuru’s predicament through his facial expressions and body language. Asuma’s demon could snap Yuru’s neck in one move if he wanted to. Although Yuru was close enough to Dera, Left and Right, Asma’s demon was undetectable to them. Not only that, but it’s made up of a swarm of black moths, meaning most attacks won’t phase it at all. The left and right need to start killing moths individually so their attacks can be effective. I’m always here to create threats that the protagonist can’t simply punch or kick.
Separating the core group is the right strategy. Yuru was teleported to Asuma and Shingo’s location, while Ivan stayed behind to deal with Dera, Left and Right. Moments like this set the exciting foundation for much of the action to come!
In episode 16, “Kagemori and Shingo,” Asuma and Shingo try to convince Yuru how releasing the power of the seal will benefit the world. It’s always fun to see the “bad guys” trying to bribe heroic characters with money and power, when all the hero wants is to live a normal life. Asuma and Shingo were unable to offer Yuru any help to change his mind. Unlike the various clans outside, Yuru is not interested in world domination. All Yuru longs for is a simple life and for Asa to finally escape being a target because of her Break power.
It’s obvious that Yuru’s attitude annoys Shingo. But there really isn’t much the old guy can do because from what I understand, Yuru has to willingly accept death to increase the likelihood of receiving the power of the seal and then allying with the Shingo family.
“Kagemori and Shingo” has a lot of action going on with lefts and rights against Ivan as Yuru is captured by Asuma and Shingo. As if Ivan’s weapon wasn’t already dangerous, this particular confrontation shows that the blade can regenerate after breaking. Not only that, the blade is sharp enough to cut left and right. Having her left arm chopped off didn’t stop her from attacking Ivan, but the right had a point. The left jab needs to be more careful. Zuo reaches out to attack Ivan with her severed arm, which is a really cool move!
You can definitely feel the blood of Yuru’s parents on the blade. So, I’m interested in finding out more about whether Ivan attacked Yuru’s parents or if he was a previous blade user.
Another action scene has Gonzo running through the Shingo clan’s warehouse. The number of demons Gonzo controls makes him an unstoppable force. Gonzo also doesn’t hesitate to take matters into his own hands against his enemies. I mean, he’s the leader of the Kagemori family for a reason.
As all this happens, a mystery is brewing within the Kagemori family mansion. When Asa wanted to meet her brother, I laughed out loud when I learned that all the background characters she drew for the Ha’Gul comics looked like Yuru. Another early comedic moment is when Yuru receives a photo of his parents from Asa, only for Asa to secretly take a photo of himself as well. The creative team knows how to make a sibling relationship work in a healthy way!
Knowing that there is a traitor in the Kagemori clan, I appreciate the writers addressing this issue in episode 17. “Crybaby and Naughty Child” reveals that the traitor is none other than Akio. I would never have doubted him, but Kim’s explanation made me say, “Oh, yes!”
Back in episode 4, Jin suspected Akio of betrayal because Yuru attacked Akio without a Daemon when they first met, not Jin or Haruo. Since Yuru only goes after those who want him dead, Jin realizes that Akio may be up to something nefarious. With everything that happened from that moment on, Ren finally decided to set a trap for Akio. What a delightful discovery!
Jin provides details about his plan, further fleshing out the Akio-centric twist. It turns out that the real Asa is assisting Gonzo in the attack on the Shingo Warehouse. Akio was tricked by Jin’s Daemon pretending to be Asa. Moreover, the real Gabby is still in the mansion. Episode 17 had a lot of enjoyable writing. I appreciate it all, Especially since I’m also a suspense novel writer myself.!
Qiu Sheng will not surrender without a fight. His determination leads to his giant demon, named the Mountain God, fighting Gabi’s demon, Gabriel. Although the Mountain God couple are powerful, they have no defense against Gabriel’s ability to bite everything.
Akio’s match with Gabby allowed Gabby to vent her frustrations with Akio and his desire to take away Asa’s only safe place. Yes, although Azo was “imprisoned” within the Kagemori clan, it was still better than other options. Gabby genuinely cares about Aso, but then again, everyone in the Kagemori family is severely restricted even if they want to help Aso more.
I was interested in learning Akio’s fate after he was captured. According to him, Gonzo would never forgive this level of betrayal. But who knows what will happen when Akio appears in front of Gonzo.
Back at Asa, she’s disguised as Natsuki as part of Jin’s plan. The real Natsuki is still at the Kagemori family mansion assisting in the arrest of Akio. Together with Gonzo, Asha can use her “destruction” powers to free a group of demons from their contracts with Shingo Clan warehouse employees.
According to the show’s lore, it’s fairly rare for someone to possess more than one pair of demons. Most daemons don’t get along well. The resulting compatibility issues may harm the Master. That’s why I’m curious about Gonzo being able to create contracts with numerous daemons without any problem. So, yes, Episode 17 explains that Gonzo’s daemon pair, named Hyakki Yako, helped suppress compatibility issues with other pairs, allowing all Gonzo’s daemons to get along.
I don’t know about you, but Hyakki Yakko’s ability is literally mind control to me. It fits the friendly demeanor of Gonzo while maintaining the sinister atmosphere of what’s going on in the background.
Asa and Gonzo most likely headed to Shingo’s headquarters after clearing out the warehouse. Della has gone there to find Yuru. The same goes for Tangi. So yeah, even though Shingo paralyzed Yuru using Fujin and Raijin, I’m super excited for the big battle that’s about to happen to save Yuru, Fake Asa, and the hostages.
