Thousand-year bloody battle of death Episode 42 of the anime’s first season, titled “Son of Darkness,” continues an ongoing series of battles. It also gave me the Orihime-centric scene I’d been waiting for. However, this scene left me conflicted.
“Dark Child” surprisingly opens with an original scene from the anime, where Orihime looks at a fire lily and thinks about how it reminds her of Ichigo. According to Orihime, the flower matches the fire within Ichigo, protecting everyone around him with unwavering passion. According to my Google search, the fire lily is supposed to represent passion, pride, and perseverance. So, yes, I know where Orihime got her idea from. Now, Orihime is ready to fight alongside Ichigo and do whatever she can to protect him.
Is such a scene necessary? Not really. But then again, it gave Orihime some insight into her mental state as she followed Ichigo up the stairs to Yuvachi’s throne room. In a way, Orihime is trying to be like Fire Lily/Ichigo. Did you know? Her determination makes sense. Orihime can also be said to have a personality like a burning lily. Orihime’s passion for protecting others helps her unlock the ability to heal others, not only by healing their wounds, but by rewriting reality as if the wounds never happened. Her determination also makes her shields nearly indestructible. Like Ichigo, Orihime has been through a series of challenges, and now it’s time for her to give it her all in the final battle.
Okay, okay. I think the fire lily scene is necessary if you want to dig deeper. It helps to compare Ichigo and Orihime as characters, drawing out the similarities between them.
Before I learned the fates of Orihime and Ichigo once I entered the Yhwach throne room, most of Dark Child focused on Kisuke’s battle with Askin. In the previous episode, Kisuke was trapped in a giant gift ball after Askin entered his Vollstandig form, and time quickly ran out for him to not only defeat Askin, but also ensure Yoruichi’s survival.
I loved how talkative Askin was during their confrontation. Since both antagonists are scientists, it makes sense for Askin to be curious about Kisuke’s thoughts on Yhwach’s desire to destroy three worlds to create a new reality. Askin, for his part, while not the most loyal follower, was very interested in what Yhwach would create. Therefore, Askin is willing to obey Yuvaqi’s orders.
On the contrary, Kisuke didn’t care at all. As a scientist, Kisuke is naturally curious. However, he was the kind of scientist who would rather create something himself than sit back and watch someone else do all the work. So, yeah, Kisuke isn’t interested in witnessing the new world Yhwach plans to create. I also love how Kisuke develops his colleague Mayuri Kurotsuchi. Mayuri may be insane, but even he won’t let Yuvachi destroy three worlds.
I could be wrong, but I think Kisuke’s perspective would likely make Askin feel like Kisuke is calling him lazy because he’s willing to be a bystander.
Askin decides to destroy Kisuke’s organs one at a time, forcing Kisuke into a desperate situation. bleach Fans finally got the moment they’ve been waiting for decades. Kisuke finally summons his Bankai, which immediately turns the tables on Askin.
Kisuke’s Bianjie is named Kannon Kaihong Hime Shinme and resembles a giant female puppet. Her ability allows Kisuke to rebuild matter instantly. The quick rebuild allows Kisuke to counter Askin’s toxic environment and deliver some nice hits. However, Askin won’t give up without a fight, and Kisuke’s rebuilding abilities can only work so long as he’s trapped inside a giant gift ball.
Kisuke finds a way for Grimmjow to launch a deadly surprise attack on Askin, another example of Kisuke being viewed as a threat by Yuvachi. As Kisuke says, war means thinking of thousands of possibilities and planning for each one. Of course, that’s what Kisuke did.
My only complaint is how the creative team handled Kisuke losing all hope of survival after Askin’s death. Kisuke comes across as a man who failed to anticipate what Askin would do. However, that particular moment didn’t make a huge difference to me because it was right after we saw Neliel preparing to break into the giant gift ball to rescue Kisuke, Grimmjow, Yoruichi, and Yoruichi’s siblings.
I will omit the Nelliel scene from episode 2 to serve as a flashback when Kisuke appears again in the anime and explains how he and the other characters survived the battle with Askin. But oh well.
Ishida’s fight with Haswals continues, with Haswals making Ishida realize that without being able to get close to the Almighty, Yhwach is still more than a match for Ichigo. Also, the fact that Ishida was still alive against the almighty Haswals… impressive!
When Ichigo and Orihime enter the throne room, Ichigo plans to focus on fighting and leave the defense to Orihime. This is a good plan. I’m excited to see if the anime will expand on the battles in the manga.
The anime does give Orihime more to do. She created a shield to prevent Yhwach’s two attacks from hitting Ichigo. She also uses the shield as a flying platform for Ichigo to avoid Yhwach’s attacks. So, it’s fair to say that the anime Orihime is a more active participant than the manga Orihime, who shows her blocking Yhwach’s attacks in a single panel.
However, that panel in the manga was more impactful to me than a bunch of things Orihime did in the anime. The manga allows the reader to focus on just said single panel and truly absorb the meaning of Orihime’s feat. A young human woman actually blocked the attack of a god-like creature without her shield breaking. I still remember how moments like this made Orihime’s fans rejoice and helped boost her stats in fan discussions. Basically, most bleach The characters don’t see her in combat. This panel increases Orihime’s reflexes, reaction time, and shield durability to unprecedented levels.
But I didn’t feel such emotions in the animated adaptation. None of Yhwach, Ichigo, or even Orihime reacted with surprise, emphasizing the impact of her ability to keep up with and block Yhwach’s attacks. I look forward to a moment of pause to recreate the feeling of the comic panel. But no. The animation team has other plans. sigh!
Regardless, the episode title “Son of Darkness” has something to do with Yhwach’s name for Ichigo. No matter how much Ichigo refuses in battle, to Yhwach, he creates Ichigo. In Yhwach’s eyes, Ichigo is a miracle, embodying the perfect balance between Death, Quincy, Sora, and the Complete Emissary. Whether Ichigo likes it or not, Yhwach plans to take back Ichigo’s powers sooner or later, since they were created by Yhwach.
