But, when the film was already in the middle part, I thought ‘boy, was I wrong’. I realized it was time to not assume genders just because of their appearance.
When Marnie Was There is one of the Studio Ghibli films that I think was explained in detail in the film, because I noticed that most of the endings to the company’s films are up to us, the viewers, to imagine.
But the question is: Is ‘When Marnie Was There’ worth watching?
Yes, especially if you want to watch something short but related to family and drama. As I mentioned before, I didn’t really know what this movie was about when I watched it, because most of the time when I watch a movie produced by Studio Ghibli I just watch it immediately without looking at the description.
Actually, this movie has a very good plot twist, which even gave me goosebumps. The story is just amazing and I like how the two main protagonists slowly built their friendship.
Anna Sasaki is one of the main protagonists of the film, she was sent to a rural coastal town due to her severe asthma attacks and it was suggested that she move to a place where the air was clean. There he met Marnie when he was wandering around and saw an abandoned mansion, seeing Marnie inside it. Anna became curious about Marnie and they eventually introduced themselves and that’s how their friendship progressed. They also meet in secret many times.
One of my favorite things about this movie is the friendship between Anna and Marnie. I thought it was really beautiful and magical. What I mean by magical is their connection to each other.
I don’t really want to spoil the plot twist of this movie for you, so I’ll just talk about what I felt when it was revealed.
The first thing I thought of when I finished watching this movie was how the story was neatly written and along with that, the little details that you might not focus on while watching the movie would actually turn out to be connected to each other. Without exaggeration, I actually got goosebumps when the plot twist was shown and I thought this movie answered all the questions I had in my mind.
There are also many relatable scenes in the movie and that can make you feel more connected to the movie.
This movie is one of my most suggested movies produced by Studio Ghibli, especially if you like movies related to drama and mystery. I love the connection between the two characters and along with that is the plot twist, I’m sure it will really surprise you. This movie really satisfied my curiosity and I love how everything is explained in detail.

Hiromasa Yonebayashi is a Japanese director and animator, who also worked for Studio Ghibli. Some of the films she worked on that gained popularity are “The Secret World of Arrietty” and “Mary and the Witch’s Flower.”

As an introvert, I totally understand his actions and thoughts throughout the movie. She doesn’t have many friends and was distancing herself from the kids in the movie, but when she met Marnie, she slowly changed and became a happier girl.
marnie He is one of the main characters of the film, his character is a mystery in the film and will eventually be revealed. Compared to Anna, Marnie is more outgoing. She is a kind and lively person who is also willing to take risks for the people close to her.
