It’s time to go back to school again! and we could We hit you with the usual school-centric anime series to get you back in the mindset. But we’re pretty sure everyone’s caught up my hero academia and MASHLE: MAGIC AND MUSCLES already. (And if you haven’t, you really should!) So we’re going back to find some classics, as well as a slightly newer beloved series.
Upgrade your spells, your fists, or anything you fight with. Because the new school year is going to be explosive in these three series!
Ako Project
For our first back to school series, let’s go shape until 1986. Ako Project It was originally intended to be part of the Lemon Cream series. (If you know it, you know it). But this super-powered high school adventure ended up becoming its own thing. Best friends A-ko and C-ko are simply trying to live their best high school lives. But her rich classmate B-ko has become obsessed with C-ko and will do whatever it takes to win over her cheerful classmate. He even designs and releases heavy artillery.
If you’re a fan of over-the-top school battle series, this is a must-watch. There’s also a good dose of science fiction, with alien spies and mecha fights everywhere. Plus, it’s an anime classic that has become a mainstay of the genre for the past 40 years.
Ako Project is available to view on RetroCrush.
GTO: Grandmaster Onizuka
Fast forward a decade, we have GTO: Grandmaster Onizuka. In addition to having a great theme, this back to school classic is a lot of fun. Based on the 1997 manga by Toru Fujisawa, the series follows a former gang member who is determined to date a girl. Your approach? Become a teacher. Because girls apparently love teachers. But with earning your teaching degree comes a degree of character development. So breathe easy: he’s not going after his students. His motherson the other hand…
GTO It’s a bit like its contemporary gokusen in the sense that it presents an unlikely teacher who ends up becoming fantastic. (In gokusen(In the case, however, the teacher is the serious daughter of a yakuza boss.) Onizuka’s approaches may be the kind of thing the PTA would disapprove of, but he gets the job done and ends up being a blessing to his students. Although it is very strange.
GTO is available to watch on Crunchyroll.
little witch academy
If you’re looking for back-to-school vibes that are a little less violent, there’s always Little Witch Academy. This Studio Trigger project started as a short film in 2013 and was turned into a two-season anime. Both the series and the film center on Akko, a young woman inspired to study to become a witch after meeting the legendary Shiny Chariot.
The full-length anime presents an even broader worldview, in which magic becomes less powerful throughout the world. As Akko strives to live up to her idol’s ideals, she also works to restore magic to the world. It’s a perfect series if you’re more into cozy magic school vibes than full-on fights.
little witch academy is available to watch on Netflix.
