Mutants tend to have really overpowered abilities in the Marvel Universe, but the X-MenThe new mutant ally is powerful on a whole new level. In addition to the intense discrimination they face, mutants also endure a cruel genetic lottery that dictates their daily lives. Countless mutants suffer from physical deformities or deeply uncomfortable afflictions that offer no advantage in combat, while a few inherit world-altering gifts that make them living gods among mortals. While a large portion of the mutant community struggles with useless extra appendages or destructive abilities they can’t control, Storm can control the weather, Jean Gray can fly, and Wolverine is immune to all injuries and illnesses.
Certain extraordinary mutations are particularly useful because they can guarantee a life of luxury. Blink’s teleportation eliminates the daily stress of commuting and allows you to immediately escape all threats. Darwin possesses a reactive adaptation, which ensures impeccable physical health and eliminates the basic human need to eat or sleep. Telepaths like Emma Frost can tell if people are telling the truth, and self-healing mutants like Wolverine are unfamiliar with illness and permanent injuries. If it weren’t for the immense power inflation in the Marvel Universe, these mutants would be untouchable in normal society.
Other mutations have less universal applications, but their unique traits make them incredibly useful in very specific cases.
Repent can transform any liquid into holy water
Strangers X-Men #36; Written by Gail Simone; Art by Luciano Vecchio and Matt Wilson
In amazing x-men #36, Marvel’s mutant exorcist Repent reveals one of his most powerful abilities: turning any liquid into genuine holy water. Repent’s holy water transmutation is useless against most X-Men villains, but considering how many demonic forces exist in the Marvel Universe, his unique talent can be exceptionally lethal. Literal demons from hellish dimensions or malevolent spirits from other planes of existence may think twice before crossing paths with Vincente Herrera, who is already so experienced in his duties that he doesn’t hesitate to exorcise the dragon Wyvern from Gambit’s body.
Repentance does not conform to the ability to create true holy water. Since childhood, Vicente Herrera has accumulated an impressive degree of experience in religion and spirituality, losing an arm and an eye along the way. Hellborn spirits often employ elaborate illusions to hide inside innocent mutant vessels, but Repent sees through their deceptions to identify exactly what type of demon they are and how to banish them. Although the process is far from easy, as Rogue and Gambit now know, Repent has the precise ritual necessary to expel each sinister being.
Repentance would be an essential asset against many of the Marvel Universe’s deadliest villains.
Regret should be on the speed dial for X-Men and The Avengers
Repent could be unstoppable against most of Marvel’s supernatural villains thanks to his virtually infinite supply of holy water, which allows him to banish, kill, or at least hurt demonic entities. Major mystical antagonists like Blackheart, Belasco, Satannish, and Madelyne Pryor may not be seriously affected, but hordes of evil spirits and vampiric legions could find their occult protections completely useless against Repent’s transmutation. And if holy water isn’t effective enough, the rest of Repent’s library of spiritual knowledge and abilities can make him a one-man army against these threats.
Parallel to Repent’s exorcism of Gambit’s Wyvern spirit in amazing x-menSteve Rogers and Doctor Doom find their souls trapped in hell in Marvel’s Armageddonwhere they put aside their differences to lead a rebellion against the overlord of the underworld, Mephisto, in their own kingdom. Repent could easily help turn the tide of this hellish war, using his limitless holy water to weaken Mephisto himself and disintegrate the endless legions of creatures that serve him. While Repent may not be interested in battles of this scale, the X-Men may want to keep in touch in case another blood hunt-The level event begins.
