Telling the story of Ten Thousand Years of Farming in the Burlington Range – Glynnis Fawkes

At the initiative of Zoe Richards of Burlington Wildways, along with naturalists Kate Kreusi and Alicia Daniels, and advised by State Archaeologist Jess Robinson, we created six signs, now installed in Burlington’s Intervale as part of the Lake Champlain Watershed Program, to tell the story of the archeology of this unique farmland in the Winooski Valley.

We started the project in 2019, working together on text and images. There were some interruptions, including my work at 1177 BC) but eventually the signs are installed in a beautifully renovated grove of trees in Intervale, just across the last parking lot and the walking and ski trails, and surrounded by farm gardens. I’ve thought a lot about ways to tell archeology stories visually: when creating my adaptation of 1177 BCand in my work as an illustrator of artifacts from excavations in Greece and other sites. Until now I haven’t had the opportunity to bring that practice to my hometown to tell the story of the people who lived here and benefited from the fertile soil of the floodplain for centuries before the present.
