Back in 2009, Platina Jazz Volume 1 was released. The album includes 18 anime jazz tracks from shows such as The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Sousei no Aquarion and Macross Plus.
10 years later, Rasmus Faber is still hard at work. He went on to release more albums of jazz arrangements and even found time to Composing a soundtrack for an animated series. I’m delighted with his efforts (even if I admit I stopped paying attention to anime a few years ago), and that’s how the Platina Jazz series continues to stay up to date, bringing fans a wide range of anime surveys with a selection of songs from both old and new anime.
now with Platina Jazz Volume 6 Published on October 23, 2019, we see their hard work pay off. Before the album was released, Their YouTube channel Featured 2 new songs: “Welcome To Japari Park” by Kemono Friends and “Sussel Todd Comb” (also known as “Sweet Death”) comes from the end of “Neon Genesis Evangelion”.

On “Welcome to Japari Park,” their jazzy treatment turns a fun, throwaway vocal song into an equally fun, swinging, swaggering selection. “Komm Susser Tod’s” adaptation also stays true to its source material. Its resigned, regretful take on Arianne’s rollicking, deadpan rock ballad shines with Niklas Gabrielsson’s pitch-perfect rendition. I found myself drawn to the “Hey Jude”-like chorus of his cover, which spoke of despair and self-abnegation.
There’s certainly more, but I haven’t listened to this album in its entirety. But hearing the initial impressions was heartening. The English version of “Zen Zen Zense” from “Kimi no Na Wa/Your Name”? The swinging “connection” from Puella Magi Madoka Magica? How about “One more time, one more chance” at 5 cm/s? Needless to say, I’m super excited about this series!
