Hideaki Anno to direct Kamen Rider movie

It has been revealed that Hideaki Anno, who recently wrapped work on the latest Evangelion film, will be the writer and director of a Kamen Rider feature film, titled Shin Kamen Rider.

The announcement was made on April 3, 2021 at 7:30 p.m. (JST), the exact date and time of the television premiere of the first Kamen Rider television series in 1971. The film is scheduled for release in March 2023. Cast and story information will be released in due course. In addition to the visual and logo reveal, a 50th anniversary commemorative video created by Anno was played at the beginning of the press conference.

Anno’s message reads: “This is a work that will fulfill an adult’s dream since childhood, a work that will remain in the hearts of children even after they grow up, a work that will transpose the historical world created by Shotaro Ishinomori and Toei Ikuta Studio to the present day, and an entertaining work that can be enjoyed by those who do not know the original image. I will aim for this and do my best.”

The 60-year-old’s last live-action film is Shin Godzilla in 2016 and his next directorial feature is Shin Ultraman (initially scheduled for summer 2021, but has since been delayed due to the pandemic).

Shin Kamen Rider wrapped up the day of announcements, which included Futo Detectives (anime adaptation sequel to Kamen Rider W) and Kamen Rider Black Sun (Kamen Rider Black Reboot).
