Episode 7 – Death: Thousand Years of Bloody War – Disaster

So, Uryu is trying to fight Yhwach. With one hand? This makes sense given the story. But can Oolong provide the same satisfaction as Ichigo? Not at all. Don’t get me wrong: As things stand, Uryu is doing great. Then again, I love how the powers in the anime and manga are pointless. Both Uryu and Yhwach are pretty good at this. But as expected, the fight between the two of them lacked the power of the fight between Ichigo and Yhwach. Oolong is cool, but he’s not Ichigo. Maybe because he’s not Ichigo, he can’t bring the same level of hype. Not that it sounds bad or anything, it just lacks the sauce that I usually enjoy and look forward to from this show. I can’t find the feeling to be excited about this myself, and as if to reflect this, the anime’s usual sense of spectacle is so overt that values ​​feel rather missing in this fight.

Even so, nothing was more anticlimactic than the sudden end to a fight with Gerald Valkyrie, who was basically just collateral damage, being killed by Yuvac. That said, that shot of him turning into a skeleton and falling – which, admittedly, does look super cool – is on screen for about two seconds, but it still makes you think, “…damn, that’s it?” Not quite like what I mentioned a few weeks ago, the Hueco Mundo arc feels like a giant way of Kubo saying, “Gee, I’m not letting Orihime get too powerful;” “Oops, I accidentally made Gerald too powerful, and I have to end things now. I hope you weren’t looking forward to that battle, which brought together three of my most powerful and favorite characters.”

I’m afraid to talk about power scaling – I know when I’m out of my depth – but I will say that Gerald going out in this way does make it feel like he, rather than Jugram, is the most powerful (non-own) Sternritter, since he’s the only one who can’t be dealt with by our protagonists, even if they try to attack him. Is this really the case? This is debatable – and I’m pretty sure a lot of people already are. Considering how important Jugram is and how relatively unimportant Gerrard is, it probably shouldn’t feel that way, even if it’s just for fairly arbitrary reasons.

At least the image of him turning into a skeleton and falling to the ground was pretty cool. If all else fails, you can at least rely on Thousands of bloody battles Bring on the visual flair, and this week is no exception. Gerald’s skeletonization, the collapsing environment, Yhwach trying to take his powers back from Ichigo, Uryu’s attacks – the visuals are as ridiculous as ever considering this is a TV anime. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the animation quality often feels downright cinematic. Everything about it is so cinematic: the visuals themselves, the quality of the animation, the direction, the camera angles, the environments, the action – everything looks great.

Especially after some of the best episodes Thousands of bloody battles Yet (and that’s saying a lot!), an episode like this still feels half-baked and very disappointing. Even more so considering how close we are to the finish line. There are still some loose ends that need to be tied up, and there are only a few episodes left before the end of this generation-defining shounen, and the time is getting closer. The greatest one was Yhwach, but he was not the only one. Even if there are bumps in the road, this anime often brings the heat and I’m still looking forward to the last few episodes. If nothing else, the stage is set and the focus will be squarely on the fight against Yhwach, whether it’s Uryu, Ichigo, both, or someone else entirely delivering the finishing blow, which is a very exciting prospect.
