I don’t like horror, but I checked it out when a coworker brought it over. Fortunately, there is no rape or nudity in this film and there is very little blood either. For me, this is a good thing, but your tastes may vary.
Demon City Shinjuku It’s a standard “demons take over the world” anime and is pretty much based on the book plot-wise. Some things are so obviously telegraphed that even a child would notice. Still, I have to say that I enjoyed watching this movie.
Issues? Aside from being a bit predictable, Rah is your standard villain who is hungry for power and will do anything to get it, including destroying the world. In my opinion, this has been played to the death. Also, it would have been nice to understand the power Kyoya has. While he may look like he’s in his early 20s, he’s supposedly still in high school. So let’s say he’s 17 years old. That means that when his father died, he was 7 years old. I just had a hard time believing that he trained to do the things his father could do, including the power to make a wooden sword cut like an energy sword. Also, I couldn’t help but think of Kyoya as a more mature KUNO Tatewaki (Rank 1/2) with that whole wooden sword thing. 🙂
In a nutshell:
There are many flaws, but I still enjoyed this title. Note that the video quality on the DVD seems little better than that of a VHS Rip, which is unfortunate. (Update: I have NOT seen the Blu-ray version, so I don’t know its quality). However, I think this title is worth renting.
