Most of the time these blind spot selections that I wouldn’t describe as underrated. The only reason they are blind spots is because they have a following, whether it’s a cult favorite or a critical favorite, they are loved by many. I’m honestly not sure why I selected the 1992 comedy. babysitter for blind spot because it doesn’t really have any of those things, but I’m glad I did it. What a fun and genuinely underrated 90s romantic comedy.
I had a great time talking about the film with my friend Ryan (see above) and what I think it does well is capture the energy of the old screwball comedies of the 50s. A distinguishing feature of these romantic comedies is the large amount of lies. Characters like Goldie Hawn in this movie start with a lie and then keep piling it on. This generates a lot of humor. Not only is there a lie, but there’s also a fake relationship, which is another fun rom-com trope.
My main flaw with babysitter It’s just that Hawn and Steve Martin never have chemistry, which makes the ending seem unbelievable. I almost wish they had a little more guts for a subversive ending where they hate each other or make each other’s lives miserable. That would have been very fun. Still, I enjoyed the ride the movie had to offer even without the amazing chemistry.
