Avengers: Judgment Day Star Anthony Mackie left fans baffled about the MCU timeline. 7 years after Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers gave him the shield Avengers: EndgameMackie’s Sam Wilson will finally get his chance to star as Captain America in a major MCU event on December 18. Doomsday. There has been some controversy surrounding Marvel Studios’ direction with Captain America in Avengers 5as Steve Rogers also returns, albeit without the stars and stripes, which many argue will only distract from his replacement.
Anthony Mackie recently sat down with Syfy and the conversation revolved around his imminent return as Captain America in Avengers: Judgment Day. The MCU veteran sparked confusion about the film’s place in the franchise’s timeline by saying it takes place. “literally months” after Captain America: Brave New Worldin which Sam Wilson started “gather the Avengers”:
“You find Cap hot on the heels of ‘Captain America: Brave New World and being involved in the idea of uniting the Avengers to fight this deadly doom. You find it literally months later’A happy world “Go into this new expedition and assemble the Avengers, assemble the crew.”
The problem comes with the fact that A happy world is one of the few MCU projects with an officially defined place in the timeline. Thanks to President Ross’s White House invitation to Sam Wilson, the public knows for certain that Captain America 4 starts around April 16, 2027.
Thanks to Avengers: Endgame Encore and the date displayed on Bruce Banner’s computer, it is now clear that Doomsday starts around January 12, 2029. That’s a far cry from Mackie’s claim that Avengers 5 is established “literally months” after A happy worldsince it’s actually about 21 months (1 year, 9 months) later.
There’s always a chance that Mackie is right and Doomsday opens with earlier scenes showing Cap recruiting his team of Avengers, including his first meeting with Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi and his reunion with Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man. However, jumping around the timeline just like Doomsday begins could be confusing to audiences, so it’s more likely that the MCU alum simply made a mistake or is out of the loop.
Is Avengers: Doomsday doing Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson dirty?
Aside from the introduction of adamantium and the President of the United States turning into an angry Red Hulk, the tease that Sam Wilson would form a new Avengers team was easily the biggest turning point in the story. A happy world. Despite rumors of a new Avengers roster featuring characters like Sam Wilson, Captain Marvel, Hulk, Wong, Shang-Chi, Falcon and She-Hulk, the lineup appearing in DoomsdayIt is undeniable that the marketing is poor, to say the least.
Instead, everything Sam Wilson seems to have produced in the almost 2 years since A happy world he’s his recent companion (Falcon), an existing Avenger (Thor), an old friend (Ant-Man), and just a new recruit (Shang-Chi). For a movie called AVENGERS: Judgment Dayone has to wonder why the actual lineup of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes is so lacking, with stronger hero lineups seen in the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and even the New Avengers (formerly Thunderbolts).
Shang-Chi actor Simu Liu already hinted that Doomsday won’t confirm what his martial arts hero has been up to for the past 5 years, and the same should be true across the board, including the MCU’s new Captain America. After all, with incursions tearing the Multiverse apart and Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom executing his own master plan, it’s hard to imagine there’ll be much time to catch up, and Doomsday It will probably jump straight into chaos.
Fans can only hope that Steve Rogers’ return doesn’t result in Sam Wilson being sidelined too much, though that may be wishful thinking given the retired Captain America’s key connection to Doctor Doom’s villainy. The unfortunate box office failure of A happy world makes it doubtful that Marvel Studios will give the green light Captain America 5 soon, so the next two Avengers The movies may be the last time Wilson is seen for a while, especially if the Multiverse Saga has something to exploit.
