Following its world premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Netflix has released its first official trailer sacrifice. Action-adventure comedy starring Chris Evans is about to be released (Avengers: Doomsday) as a movie star kidnapped by the leader of an inspiring group, played by Anya Taylor-Joy (Furiosa: The Legend of Mad Max), who planned to sacrifice him in a volcano.
According to the official introduction: “At a star-studded charity gala, a movie star facing an existential crisis is taken hostage by a radical fighter and his followers. As night falls, an inward journey and outward adventure ensues, blurring the lines between performance and faith, salvation and sacrifice.“
talk with Netflix TaddumTaylor-Joy reflected on the thematic depth of the film: “This is a meta movie well worth participating in. I see a lot about individual efforts versus collective efforts. I see how insensitive a lot of people have become and they don’t value what’s really important instead of looking at things in a simpler, fun way. It’s this concept that allows you to keep things under wraps, and I think Joan and her tribe are cold to it.“

Romain Gavras (athena; The world is yours) directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Will Arbery (succession; seven sisters).
As for where the idea for the film came from, Gavras shared: “Inspired by Greek mythology and French stories such as Joan of Arc,” and then jokingly added, “There is another recent myth, and that is The Lord of the Rings. When Will and I were writing, there were times when we thought, “Oh, we’re making Lord of the Rings.” It’s the journey that people want to take to throw rings of power into volcanoes, and we’re on that same journey.“
