While many superheroes have joined the justice league Over the decades, it’s rare that the team’s roster has been as large as it currently is in Justice League Unlimited. Following the events of Absolute powerCore members such as Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman opened the ranks of the Justice League to include most of the world’s superheroes. That lineup has grown even more afterKO with the implementation of an amnesty program for a handful of former supervillains.
Most of the heroes that make up the expanded Justice League these days are familiar faces, but some new players have also been added to the mix since the title launched in late 2024. Two years later, DC delivered the full backstory of the best character in this group of new DC heroes, and it’s a heartbreaking story.
Cadejos’ origin story has been revealed
Justice League: The Dark Kingdom Special #1, written and illustrated by Dan Mora
Introduced in Absolute power #3, Cadejos is possibly the most impressive new addition to appear on the list Justice League Unlimited. The man known as Andrés Aguilar can become a fierce and imposing werewolf-like figure who is armed with magical chains, and has been seen fighting the forces of evil alongside his fellow Costa Rican heroes Boruka and Rana Dorada. Justice League: The Dark Kingdom Special #1 informs readers that Andrés obtained his Cadejos form thanks to the tragic kidnapping of Victoria, his young daughter.
This issue begins with Andrés dreaming about Victoria being kidnapped by a demonic beetle-like monster, only to be awakened by the Cadejos entity he is linked to. Andrés agreed to let this wolf spirit have the power to rescue Victoria. It is also revealed that Cadejos once worked with his brothers to keep our reality and the Dark Realm separate. However, he violated the laws imposed by his creator, causing Cadejos to be stripped of his power, chained and walking the world as a “witness” until meeting Andrés.
Justice League: The Dark Kingdom Special In #1, Cadejos teams up with Boruka, Rana Dorada, El Capitan, Blue Beetle (Jaime Reyes), and Zatanna to close a portal to the Dark Realm. Until that moment, Andrés had been in the driver’s seat, that is, he was in control of his own body by exercising the power of the Cadejos. To achieve the Justice League’s ultimate goal, Andrés agrees to temporarily relinquish control to Cadejos, unleashing an even more monstrous form of Cadejos.
The good news is that Cadejos successfully closes the portal, rescuing the girl who was supposed to keep it open after two other people were sacrificed to open it. The bad news is that this gap to the Dark Realm, which contains the manifestations of negative energy produced by humans, has been open for too long. The Justice League heroes featured in this issue already had enough trouble dealing with the manifestation born of the “Fear, pain and suffering remain” for a cancer that joined a human being. Other manifestations may also cross paths.
Worse yet, the cancer manifestation claimed that Darkseid showed him the way from the Dark Realm to Earth. This plants even more narrative seeds for the inevitable return of the lord of Apokolips, who has been busy conquering other universes afterwards. KO As that all-too-familiar threat and potentially more manifestations of the Dark Kingdom loom on the horizon, Andrés and Cadejos are still determined to find Victoria one day.
