Captain Great Britain comics, through his time as the telepathic X-Man known as Psylocke, a brief period as Captain Great Britain herself in the ’80s for Marvel UK, a much longer one during the Krakoa era, and all the body-swapping, ninja training, and psychic knife-using mayhem in between. now in Christopher Yost and Tony Danielthe next Maximum X-MenBetsy Braddock has a new code name, Butterfly. So Storm decides that the X-Men will have to do it, and she and Wolverine formed a squad dedicated to that specific purpose. The team includes Bishop, Colossus, Iceman, Betsy Braddock (previously Psylocke and Captain Britain, and here called Butterfly), Firestar, and Justice. Of the last two, I have a strong attachment to them, having worked with both on NEW WARRIORS and AVENGERS In the past, I’ve been wanting to give Vance a little X-Men review for a while now. For decades, Betsy’s use of her telepathic powers has been visually signaled by that distinctive psychic butterfly aura around her face or head. He was there in the classic. Chris Claremont/Alan Davis/Jim Lee Days, followed her during the body swap with Kwannon, and remains one of the most consistent visual signatures associated with the character, even as her appearance, costume, and role have changed. Fans have even nicknamed her “the butterfly of death.” Now Marvel seems to be leaning fully into it.

In the new series, Maximum X-Men. which releases in December, sees Storm forming a team including Wolverine, Colossus, Bishop, Iceman, Firestar, Justice and Betsy in the wake of Avengers: Armageddon. Previous solicitations and announcements had listed her as Psylocke, leading to the usual round of “but Kwannon is Psylocke now” debates. It seems like the solution is a clean break: Kwannon gets Psylocke, Betsy gets something that nods to her long history without claiming the name that’s been so disputed, and the butterfly has landed.
