Deconstructing the new ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ trailer – The Nerds of Color

Doom is coming! After months of much speculation and a rabid internet appetite for a trailer, today Marvel Studios finally released a new one for Avengers: Judgment Day!

Since CinemaCon in April, fans have been pressuring Marvel Studios to release footage from Avengers: Judgment Day shown at the annual trade show convention in Las Vegas. Not only did Kevin Feige’s House of Heroes release a trailer, but they also managed to give us footage that was quite different from what was shown at CinemaCon. Naturally, it’s our duty as color nerds to analyze everything we saw!

destroyer of worlds

The trailer doesn’t start in the main MCU, but in the universe that technically started it all: Fox. X-Men universe (or potentially a variant thereof). Presumably, this is the same universe that Monica Rambeau found herself in during the post-credits scene of the wonders.

In a way, starting the trailer here is a nice nod to the fact that the first film Feige worked on was, in fact, from 2000. X-Men. While that was a very different era for comic book movies: one that was still licking its wounds from the fallout of the disastrous 1997s. batman and robin – the film, together with Bladeset Marvel on a trajectory that would ultimately lead to the creation of the MCU. So naturally, we should start the trailer with its destruction.

This is all set to our first taste of Robert Downey Jr.’s voice as Victor Von Doom. He’s definitely using an Eastern European-style accent that’s unlike anything we’ve heard before, adding to the plausibility of the MCU’s version of Latveria and declaring, “Before this day is over, we will be faced with an unthinkable decision.” We finally get a good look at the villain himself, looking very faithful to the comics. You will notice that we can get a good glimpse of one of its medallions, which looks like a star; actually, not unlike Captain Marvel’s symbol. Maybe this is a coincidence? With Doom being a known conqueror of worlds, it would not be out of the question to speculate that he has already killed a variant of Captain Marvel before. Or potentially, he has the same omnipotent power as her. I could be reaching here, but the symbol on this medallion is quite curious.

Thor reunites the Avengers

We then return to New York, as any good Marvel story does, and get a brief shot of the exterior of the New Avengers building, seen last year in Good heavens. We know this is the logo of Valentina’s team, which I’m sure is Sam Wilson. completely it’s okay with. That logo is huge, much larger than the one on the original Avengers Tower, suggesting that the team is compensating for the perception that these anti-heroes are not the legitimate Avengers.

We have a voiceover of Thor trying to get all the groups together to fight Doom. This will likely occur after his first meeting with Victor, which could be from a scene we see later in the trailer. I find it funny that Thor is always the first to face the big threat, like he was with Thanos.

I also wonder what happened to his adopted daughter, Love. I imagine that despite having the powers of Eternity, she can be completely removed from the equation. Somehow he finds the Fantastic Four and enters the New Avengers base with them.

We see a meeting of the teams: The New Avengers, led by Yelena and Bucky; the classic Avengers, led by Sam Wilson’s Captain America (and including Joaquín Torres’ Falcon and Scott Lang’s Ant-Man); and Marvel’s first family, the Fantastic Four, in the center (with Mr. Fantastic sporting a nice jacket). This presumably follows the post-credits scene of Good heavenswhen the team sees the Fantastic Four ship entering the main MCU. Behind them we see a screen highlighting multiple Earths. I guess Reed uses it to explain the science behind the multiverse and raids.

Wakanda and Talokan

We are then taken to Wakanda and Talokan, where we see shots of Namor, Shuri, M’Baku, and more. When we last saw them, Shuri and Namor (in a variation of the cool black vest he has in the comics) were in an uneasy truce with each other. We see that this animosity has not really been shaken. I mean, how could it be, since Namor killed Queen Ramonda? However, in Thor’s words, the characters seem to be trying to put aside their differences to stop Doom.

Thor vs. Doom

That brings us to a Thor vs. Doom. I think this will probably be earlier in the movie, and the event that leads to Thor reuniting the Avengers and the Fantastic Four, because I think he loses a lot. It’s hard to say where they are. Based on the ruins and statues everywhere, it’s possible that these are the remains of another universe that Doom has laid waste to, perhaps an alternate Asgard? The void? The realm of the Beyonders? There’s a tall, lanky statue behind Doom that looks a bit like the appearance of Jonathan Hickman’s Beyonders. secret wars and Avengers runs.

AVX

We know for sure that there will be a long-awaited battle between Avengers and X-Men in the X-Mansion. The explosion of the staircase is glimpsed and Cyclops, fully dressed in his Jim Lee finery, appears with his visor glowing. This is the best shot we’ve seen so far of the comic book costume. We also get an amazing shot of Gambit fighting Shang-Chi, which made me wonder: what happens if Gambit grabs one of the rings and charges it? I’d love to see if that’s possible!

Later on, we see the anticipated fight between Mystique and Yelena, but before that we get a shot of Reed Richards and HERBIE right behind her. It is likely that we will also see a fight between Nightcrawler and Reed Richards here, as Alan Cumming recently announced. Also, note HERBIE’s improved design!

We get the briefest shots of Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, apparently returning to work for TVA. Maybe you’re still holding the Multiverse together but found a way to do it while keeping your TVA and 401K benefits? That’s all we get from him this time, but it’s enough as we know he’ll be a key figure in the battle for the multiverse. There is rampant speculation that he will likely take the place of Hickman’s Molecule Man. secret wars execute, which we can see happening.

Hello and goodbye

We then see a montage of scenes in which Thing meets up with Shuri and M’Baku, along with Bucky, Falcon, Sue, and Ghost, as well as a series of emotional shots showing Xavier and Magneto, Scott Lang and Cassie, and, most interestingly, Johnny Storm and (who I think is) Franklin preparing to say goodbye. It really seems like no one is safe, and it looks like Johnny is about to sacrifice himself to save Franklin (if that’s him). It’s possible he’s simply absorbing the flames approaching the boy, but things don’t look good overall.

We also see a photo of Sue standing in front of a wall of water. This will be important because later in the trailer we see Namor and Sue fighting. This is absolutely a callback to Namor’s affection for Sue in the comics and the, ahem, chemistry between them. I’m sorry, Reed.

A miracle in the face of doom

The trailer shows some money shots of seemingly impossible things. The first is a callback to the Thor vs. Doom, but it tells us everything we need to know about how powerful Doom is. With two fingers he stops Stormbreaker. The camera shows our first real look at Dr. Doom’s mask, in all its glory. Again, something that terrifies Thor.

As soon as we see the face of Doom, Thor also finds the face of hope! We see him talking to someone, who shouts “Hello, friend.” Thor says, “It is not possible,” before showing him the newly assembled Mjölnir. The other person takes it in their hand, as we cut to Steve Freaking Rogers’ face! Evans, as we knew, is back. He’s not in uniform now, so it’s questionable whether or not he’ll don the stars and shield in the movie. One would hope he would. But it just wouldn’t feel like a Avengers Movie without him!

The trailer has been a huge hit so far, generating over 20 million views on YouTube in its first seven hours online. Obviously, we’ve hit the repeat button several times ourselves. With all the excitement and possible rampant speculation, who could resist?

Avengers: Judgment Day hits theaters December 18. It’ll be a long wait until then, but stay tuned to The Nerds of Color for more coverage of Avengers: Judgment Day as we get closer to its imminent release!
